    The Benefits of Solo Journeys
John Steinbeck once said, “People don't take trips- trips take people." A solo trip, in
particular, can have lasting benefits. Generations of adventurers have set off on journeys of
self-discovery- -traveling alone to many breathtaking destinations. Some of the best travel
memoirs tell stories of solo travelers finding themselves on their own. Apart from easing
tension to boost happiness, the solitude during the trip also helps to build new relationships,
allow for flexible schedules and arouse worthy reflections.
Solo journeys can alleviate mild depression, thereby bringing joy. Recent research has
found that the expectation of an upcoming vacation boosts feelings of happiness for up to
eight weeks before the trip. Another study on adolescents suggests that time spent in solitude
can help to shake off depression in young people. Free from the distractions of daily life, the
traveler can focus his full attention on absorbing the present moment with all the senses.

The solo traveler can be his own master of the day, because he does not have to adhere to
anyone else's schedule. He can relax as much as he wants; he can rest and loosen up as longas he likes. He might indulge in full days reading on the beach, take a leisurely hike, or sit on
a bench admiring a work of art- all on his own.“The experiences are mine and mine alone,
said a solo traveler. "I've really learned to enjoy spending time with myself."
Traveling solo also offers a great chance for reflection. As one travel memoir writer
stated, "There is a soul-searching power in each adventure on your own." Getting to really
know oneself is a wonderful by-product of a solo journey. Traveling alone allows one to
witness how he reacts to different situations. Those reflections can help him to gain a deeper
understanding of who he is and what matters to him. He will have a stronger sense of self and
    feel more self-assured.
Solo travel can afford the traveler the necessary time and solitude for experiencing
unexpected pleasures, building new relationships, enjoying the slow pace and the reflections
of life. Aside from all the excitement and adventure, it ultimately leads to self- discovery. The
traveler, once hitting the road solo, will fall in love with it and the jouney never ends.

  • 1、[主观题]【撰写大纲】Establishing Good Relationships with Instructors
As class sizes across the country continue to rise, many community college students arestruggling to connect with instructors. To combat some of the potential issues of over-sizedclasses,or to benefit from smaller classes, students must strive to build positive workingrelationships with instructors.
One of the primary benefits of building effective relationships with an instructor is astudent's ability to receive more specific feedback and instruction, whether you are takingpre-requisite or elective courses. Students who establish positive professional relationshipswith instructors can obtain more insight on how to create a specific course plan for increasedprogress.
As researcher Linda Jacobson suggests, students should meet with instructors after largeassignments or tests are returned. A“mini-conference,"or meeting with an instructor, provides both parties with an opportunity to focus on the finished final assignment, essay, ortest. Additionally, the more students meet with instructors early in the course, the less timestudents will need to meet with an instructor later on in the course--as you have alreadysolidified your course fundamentals.
Iln addition to helping students with coursework, building positive relationships withinstructors also allows students to foster a positive interaction that can open up theopportunity for dialogue if a disagreement later arises. Whether students disagree with adesignated grade or disagree with an instructor's course content or teaching strategies, astrong relationship, established early in the course, can allow a student and instructor to morefruitfully negotiate any potential concerns.
Then, how could students establish a positive relationship with their instructors? Meetingwith an instructor individually is one of the best ways to establish a positive workingrelationship. As Jacobson explains, "Individual conferences and thorough evaluation make itpossible to clarify specific concepts that, for a particular student, may not have been clearfrom the text or general classroom discussion.”
Meeting individually with an instructor also provides students with an opportunity toreceive positive written and oral feedback from the instructor. When students engage in thistype of process and receive specific information, they can focus on improvement and build onstrengths.
Besides, it is strongly recommended to meet during the instructor's office hours.AsEcampus explains,“You probably aren't going to get very far if you try to talk to yourprofessor immediately before or after class. Instead, drop by to see him during his regularoffice hours or send him an email to request an appointment. Your professor will be able todevote more attention to the issues you wish to discuss if you confront him at the appropriatetime."'The instructor should announce his/her office hours on the first day of class; however,if he/she does not, students can simply inquire about office hours before or after class, or viaemail.
By taking active steps to develop a rapport and relationship with their instructors, students can not only improve their academic performance but also open lines of importantcommunication.

  • 2、[主观题]II. Write an outline. (20 points)
Read the following passage carefully and compose a “topic outline”for it.
    E-mail—Return to Sender?
For many of us, turning on the computer and checking for e-mail messages has become a part of our daily routine. The growing popularity of e-mail makes us wonder how we ever survived without it. In. our enthusiasm for e-mail, we should realize that e-mail is a poor substitute for regular mail both in our personal lives and in the business world.
There is no denying that e-mail has many merits. The most obvious one is speed. We can send e-mail around the world in a matter of minutes. It is this speed that has led to our calling regular mail “snail mail.” E-mail involves less expense, for most people, than regular mail. Many people have access to e-mail for free through their work or school. And while some people may pay for e-mail through an online service, there is no increase in cost relative to the number of messages sent. Admittedly, e-mail is convenient. It allows us to send the same message to many people at the same time with little more effort than it takes to send a message to one person. When sending multiple copies of a message, we avoid the trouble of photocopying the letter, printing out additional copies, addressing envelopes, and posting the mail.
Despite its many benefits, e-mail is not always appropriate. Before dashing off another piece of e-mail—in our private lives or in the business world—we need to pause and consider whether the post office or a carder might be more fitting.
It would be sad to think that letters from friends might become obsolete. With e-mail, unfortunately, all messages look very much alike, and this sameness removes some of the wonder of getting a message in the first place. We have no handwriting to scrutinize, no perfumed envelope to smell, no colors or textures to enjoy. For these more personal things we must still rely on regular mail. Besides, opening old computer files is never as much fun as pulling a dusty shoebox out of the closet to browse through old letters and photos. 
In the business world, as in our personal lives, e-mail is not always an appropriate medium. The issue of privacy requires serious consideration. Because of its electronic transmission in networked systems, e-mail may be accessible to co-workers and supervisors. It’s probably not a good idea to complain about the boss on the company e-mail or to write anything that shouldn’t be shared with strangers or potential enemies. The informality of e-mail may as well affect the image of the sender. For much company business, a certain level of courtesy and formality is desirable; e-mail can seem inappropriate because of its relatively slapdasn quality.Olien, because Of its speed,e-mail encourages “flaming,” sending Off rapid-fire emotional messages that can get a businessperson in serious trouble.
While e-mail giyes us the ability to send messages with convenience, speed, and litte expense,it 1acks the personality and authority of regulaur mail.Luckily, however,we needn’t always choose one over me other. Instead,we should take advantage of both, using each to its best advantage.

  • 4、[主观题]Ⅰ.Supply the missing paragraph (20 points)
The following passage is incomplete with one body paragraph missing. Study the following passage carefully and write a body paragraph of about 100 words. Make sure that the tone and vocabulary you use are in unity with the passage provided.
In recent 10 years, with the advent of IT era, the role of a library has changed a lot. It is no longer restricted to the traditional function of lending books, but becomes a synthesis of educational functions. Some people think that a library should keep in pace with modern technology while others insist that a library should maintain its original function and resist hi-tech materials.
Admittedly, books are the main resources of a library, and helping people to read is the main function of a library. But the 21st century has changed the traditional definition of “book”. It is not only related to the printed materials, but also expands to a wider range, covering visual and audio publications, e-books, essay data bases, and website resources. In such an occasion, a library has to reform its old functions and introduce new functions. Once a library becomes modern, it would have the ability to display all educational resources to the public. Otherwise, it might fade out from our horizon and even become a museum. Moreover, it is the public’s demand that dominates the reformation of a library. Nowadays, people ask more. They are no longer satisfied with a simple function in a library, and furthermore, they would like to enjoy a cup of coffee as well. Therefore, a library has to add café, internet bar and video room to its original design. Overall, the money spent on the relatively expensive hi-tech media would arm a library and make it more educational, as well as attractive. What it invests would definitely result in a huge return.
    ______________________________________________________________________________
    ______________________________________________________________________________
All things considered, I have reasons to believe that developing hi-tech media in a library is a right choice. A library should allocate a certain part of money on updating hi-tech materials, as well as books.

    Attaining Success in College
Succeeding in college is not only important to getting and education, but also crucial in this day and age to success in the work place. To me, the three most important things for attaining a successful college experience are having smart classroom conduct, taking advantage of campus resources, and making college the first priority.

Making good use of campus resources is also of great importance to college success. The school library has many resources for the growth of the students’ mind. With computers and copy-machines for individual use, computer labs and writing labs are there not just for learning purposes but also for actual help with writing papers. The “office hours” will help the students build a close relationship with their professors and give them access to the professors’ mind. From the professors the students can acquire possible extra information that may put them ahead of their study. All these resources are free, since they are funded by student tuitions. So taking good advantage of the resources can only make the students’ education more attainable.
Finally, any students who want to assure success must establish school as the top priority. Personally I have watched some students slowly loosen up; I have seen a pattern of partying and a lack of motivation. Many of the freshmen have no idea why they are in college, and their “eyes” often tell it all. This world is so rich in distractions that it is hard to keep a strong focus, especially if one is just starting his or her academic career. It is said that the first semester is often the most “unsuccessful” one. This certainly rings true for me. I made mistakes in this regard and eventually learned that, to achieve success, school must always be placed above other things.
In my college experience, I have observed and learned how to achieve success. I wish someone had told me earlier the importance of having that smart classroom conduct, of fully utilizing the school resources, and of making college my top priority. Then, my college beginnings would not have been so rocky and tough.
